Free-Range Kids

I was recently reading a book called “Free-Ranged Kids. How to raise safe, salf-reliant children (without going nuts with worry)” by Lenore Skenazy and it had me thinking a lot about so many thing about safety and what its implications are while having kids.

The book is written in a very entertaining way and at the same time, I think it discuses issues that are profound with respect to raising a child in these days.  There are two main themes developed, the first one is abut safety with our children.  Products to make you house safe, places where you can safely go to, or not, things that you allow your kids to do, depending on their age, places where they can play, etc.  The second one is about self-reliance and education.  Basically to allow your children to do things appropiate for their age and allow them to feel capable and responsible for their actions.

As a parent, you can get quite confused, to be honest, with the overwhelming world of safety for children .  I don’t want to be un-safe of course, but some of the products and the decisions have not much to do with safety but more with giving parents some comfort, and that is the tricky part that should be solved with commons sense, which we all now is not so common anymore.

If you have a chance, visit their website, is very interesting to open a debate.

What does Comiditas mean?

Comiditas is the name in Spanish for the tea game, or playing with your food.  Comida means meal or food.  Comiditas is associated with the game were you make mud pies, have tea parties and make sandwiches in the backyard.

New – Ice cream set

Coming Soon!

We’ve been working for several months on the Ice Cream set.  Developing ideas, making changes, trying things out, etc.  Finally, I’m very proud to show our new set.  This is the product that we are launching for Decembre, but I think its important to share it now so you can see what it is and I would love to get comments on it.

I really like it, hope you do too!

Comiditas in Canada (update)

Well, I´ve started doing some research on the possibility of bringing our product from Mexico to Canada.

The business´s production is made in Guadalajara and we started a business relationship with several children´s museums in Mexico called Trompo Mágico Papalote Museo del Niño,and Explora, centre of sciences.  In 2010, Comiditas began to be in an art supplies & paper store as one of the educational toys that they promote, Lumen (several stores in the country).

This has implications for me in order to have the products in Canada.  The team grew three times in the past two months, and now adjustments have been made to fulfill the requirements of our partners.

Now Comiditas is preparing to be in Vancouver for the first time in a community fair on September 11th, 2010.  The event is the 4th Annual Barn Raising at the Old Barn Community Centre (UBC) from 1 to 5 pm.  The event will have activities for families and a artisan´s market.  If you are around, hope to see you there!

That´s the story so far.  Thanks for tuning.
